Tractor market, variability of used units

A survey conducted by FederUnacoma has disclosed the sales of machines with of offer of good deals has increased over those of new machines. In 2016, new tractor sales came to 18,341 units compared to sales of 27,946 used machines with an average of less than twenty years. Prevailing strongly on the used tractor market are lower power units where for those in the over 75 kW category, farmers prefer new machines

The registration tractors has been in sharp decline these past years while the sales of used machines have greatly expanded. This was the finding of a survey conducted by the FederUnacoma Studies and Statistics Office which analyzed sales of used tractors with transfers of titles registered by the Ministry of Transport.

These results were made public by FederUnacoma, the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Federation, at the federation’s national assembly held on 22nd june in Varignana in the Bologna Province. In 2016, sales of new tractors came to 18,341 units while 27,946 used units were sold off to confirm that there are farming enterprises in need of a more powerful machinery inventory but lack the financial resources to the acquisition of new machinery. The survey is still under study going back year by year to determine the volume of sales for an historic picture of used machinery sales to compare to the trend of new tractor sales and identify the ages of the large number of used tractor sold.

The data on 2016 sales show that the used tractor moved had an average age of less than twenty years.

A look into the types of new tractors sold disclosed that the most substantial quota was for the vineyard and orchard specialists which accounted for 37% of total 2016 new registrations, 6.794 units out of the total of 18,341.

On the other hand, the sale of used tractors in the specialist category was much lower, 15% at 4,190 units out of the 27,945 total.

These figures confirm the growth of the vineyard and orchard specialists on the domestic market and perhaps the stronger interest of specialized farmers in new generation machines.

The number of units show that vineyard and orchard tractorscoming directly off the assembly line are greater in number than used machines.

An examination of more powerful categories of tractors according to new and used tractors discloses that new vineyard and orchard specialists strongly prevail in the range from 56 to 75 kW and that for new conventional tractors, in the lead were those from 75 to 130 kW and in the 130 kW category whereas for used tractors, the lower power categories were in the lead.

The outgoing FederUnacoma President Massimo Goldoni said, “With an analysis of the past series it will be possible to see whether the second hand market declined in these years in parallel with new units or grew to offset the crisis of new registrations.

The facts are that the volume of used units sold on the national market is really excessive and that their average age is too high, a factor of poorer quality and technological level of the machines working on our farms.” Goldoni went to conclude, “The massive acquisition of old machines by farmers might be one of the reasons why many of them are reluctant to start up the procedure for the revision of machinery.

But especially, this shows how some restrictive policies at the European level requiring manufacturers to continuously modify machinery to thus increase their prices winds up by discouraging acquisition to drive up business in obsolete machinery.”
