Le azioni svolte nei primi tre anni di attività sono state infatti finalizzate a mettere in evidenza le opportunità offerte dalla gestione attiva dei boschi e individuare gli ostacoli da superare per la piena valorizzazione delle risorse, che comprendono anche i servizi ecosistemici generati dal patrimonio boschivoforestale. In Abruzzo, oltre un terzo del territorio regionale, che si estende per poco più di un milione di ettari, rientra nel contesto delle aree naturali protette ed è caratterizzato da una forte componente montana densamente boscata. È proprio per questo che si assiste ad una contrapposizione, che è assolutamente necessario superare, tra un approccio conservativo o “museale” dei boschi e uno dinamico o “produttivo”. In tale prospettiva, la meccanizzazione delle operazioni forestali è chiamata a svolgere un ruolo strategico per garantire la sostenibilità finanziaria e sociale della gestione attiva delle nostre foreste. I vecchi sistemi, basati sul lavoro manuale con l’ausilio di animali da soma, non sono né competitivi sotto il profilo economico, né accettabili, sotto quello sociale, per l’eccesiva fatica e il rischio di incidenti che essi comportano. Tuttavia, l’impiego di macchine sempre più agili e potenti amplifica il rischio ambientale, e richiede pertanto un loro impiego professionale e controllato. A tale scopo, GESTA con il supporto di Itabia, CNR Ibe e FederUnacoma ha realizzato – presso un bosco di latifoglie all’interno del Parco Nazionale Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga – una modalità di lavoro innovativa basata sull’integrazione tra animali e macchine. L’obiettivo, pienamente centranto, era quello di rendere più efficiente il lavoro con animali e più eco-compatibile quello con le macchine. Questo connubio, apprezzato anche dallo stesso Ente Parco per come è stato pianificato, si potrebbe introdurre in un maggior numero di cantieri rilanciando l’attuale, limitatissima (e decrescente) disponibilità di squadre dotate di animali. Al contempo, la nuova modalità di lavoro consente una forte mitigazione degli impatti ambientali relativi all’introduzione della meccanizzazione.
