10 PRIMO PIANO Un obiettivo che si rafforza se si pensa, come evidenziano a più riprese diversi report delle più importanti banche d’affari, che l’India è attualmente una delle sole tre economie al mondo in grado di generare una crescita economia annuale superiore ai 4-500 miliardi di dollari. Agricoltura ancora protagonista In questo scenario e in un Paese che da solo possiede poco meno di un terzo dell’intera superficie dell’Europa l’agricoltura rimane il settore trainante. Su una superficie lorda di oltre 200 milioni di ettari, ben 140 milioni sono quelli seminati, più della metà irrigati. Ancora oggi (ultimo dato relativo al 2021) il 44% degli indiani è attivo nel settore primario. Un dato in calo, ma lieve se si pensa che nel 2011 il valore era al 49%. Impiegati nelle colture di pieno campo, con i cereali a dominare (riso in primis con oltre 40 milioni di ettari) ai quali si aggiungono 25 milioni di ettari di semi oleosi, nell’allevamento zootecnico (oltre 300 milioni di bovini e 200 milioni di ovini) e nell’ortofrutticoltura ai quali sono destinati poco meno di 20 milioni di ettari (circa 8 nella frutticoltura, 11,5 nell’orticoltura). Su quest’ultimo passaggio torneremo. Con questi numeri l’India è ormai da diversi anni il primo mercato mondiale della meccanizzazione agricola in termini numerici. Ancora una volta i numeri parlano. Nel 2022 si è toccata la strabiliante cifra di 912 mila trattrici vendute (l’intera Unione Europea naviga attorno alle 200 mila unità), massimo storico di poco superiore al record del 2021 (903 mila trattrici). Un valore destinato a essere ritoccato al rialzo, considerato che nei primi nove mesi del 2023 sono già state vendute oltre 680 mila trattrici con una crescita del 6,4% rispetto all’analogo periodo del 2022. Un andamento che, se confermato, mette nel mirino l’impensabile cifra del milione di trattori venduto all’anno in un Paese che già oggi ospita il più grande costruttore mondiale in termini numerici, Mahindra. L’apporto della meccanizzazione italiana Anche in questo caso gli analisti più critici rimarcano il fatto di un parco macchine basico, fatto di piccole potenze e di tecnologie che in Occidente risultano spesso datate. Nondimeno, l’India registra un sostanziale miglioramento in tutti i segmenti, con un’attenzione particolare verso le proposte estere. In the past decade, this value has more than doubled, and expectations are for a further doubling in a shorter time frame. Even more so if the first stated goal of the Modi strategy, to turn India into the world's premier manufacturing hub, is achieved. This target is strengthened by the fact that India is currently one of only three economies in the world capable of generating annual economic growth in excess of $4-500 billion, as several reports from leading investment banks repeatedly point out. Agriculture is still a major player. In this scenario and in a country that alone has just under a third of Europe's entire land area, agriculture remains the leading sector. Out of a gross area of more than 200 million hectares, as many as 140 million are sown, more than half irrigated. Even today (latest figure for 2021), 44 percent of Indians are active in the primary sector. This figure is declining, but slightly when considering that in 2011, the figure was at 49 percent. They are employed in field crops, with grains dominating (rice in the first place with over 40 million hectares) plus 25 million hectares of oilseeds, livestock farming (over 300 million cattle and 200 million sheep) and horticulture to which just under 20 million hectares are allocated (about 8 in fruit farming, 11.5 in horticulture). We will get back to you on this last passage. With these numbers, India has been the world's leading agricultural mechanization market in numerical terms for several years now. Once again, the numbers do the talking. In 2022, the astonishing figure of 912 thousand tractors sold was reached (the entire European Union sails around 200 thousand units), an alltime high just slightly higher than the 2021 record (903 thousand tractors). This figure is bound to be adjusted upward, given that more than 680 thousand tractors have already been sold in the first nine months of 2023, with a 6.4 percent growth over the same period in 2022. A trend that, if confirmed, puts in the crosshairs the unthinkable figure of one million tractors sold per year in a country that is already home to the world's largest manufacturer in terms of numbers, Mahindra.
