Non c’èdubbio. Direi che,alla vigiliadel semestredi presidenza italiana inEuropa,
l’esitodelleelezioni restituisceautorevolezzaal nostroPaese,chedifficilmenteavreb-
bepotuto guidare lepolitiche comunitarieavendoal proprio internouna forte com-
ponenteantieuropeista.Sarebbeunerrore, tuttavia, interpretare il risultatodelleur-
ne comeun responsodefinitivo, perché il lavorodel governoèappenaall’inizio.
Lo stesso presidente di Confindustria Squinzi, nel corso dell’assemblea gene-
rale tenutasi alla fine di maggio, ha detto che l’esito delle urne porta in sé il
messaggio di una forte volontà di riforme.
Ha ragione il presidenteSquinzi. Del resto in tutti questi anni l’atteggiamento della
Confederazione rispettoalmondopoliticoèstatopragmatico,valutando l’azione legi-
slativa e di governo sulla base dell’efficacia e della concretezza senza pregiudiziali
ideologiche. Insomma, le formuleper il rilanciodell’economia,più cheessereplausi-
bili sul piano teorico, debbono funzionare sul piano pratico. E’ questo che il mondo
produttiosi aspetta.

There is no doubt. On the eve of the semester of the Italian Presidency of the
Council of the European Union I would say that the outcome of the election re-
storesauthoritativeness toour countrywhichwouldhave found it difficult to take
over leadership of EU policy with a strong domestic anti-European component.
However it would be amistake to interpret the ballot box results as a definitive
response because thework of the government has only begun.
Confindustria President Squinzi said at a general assembly held at the end of
May that the outcome of the vote carried in itself a strong desire for reform.
President Squinzi is right.Moreover, inall these years theConfindustriaattitude
towards the political word has been pragmatic, evaluating thework of the legis-
latureand government on thebasisof efficiency and concrete realitywithout ide-
ological prejudice. In substance, the formule for relaunching the economy has
towork at the level of practicality rather than be plausible at the theoretical lev-
el.
At this Confindustria assembly DevelopmentMinister Federica Guidi that the
enginedriving theeconomy is theprofitsof enterprisesand theymustwork to
restore profitability for themselves.
Certainly! And this doesn’tmean negating those principles of sustainability and
social responsibility which have been developed over the year by these enter-
prisesand for which therearegreat expectationson thesideof theworldof work
and public opinion. The prosperity of the enterprise today is linked not only to
competitiveness of products but to the public consensus it’s able towin thanks
to good relations with the territory, environmental sensitivity, the correct use of
resourcesandsound cooperationwith itspartnersat homeandabroad. Theprof-
