66 kg di CO

(8,5% del totale) attribuibili ai soffiatori. Il re-
stante49%del totale (747kgCO
2
/anno) è imputabileaimez-
zi di trasporto, di cui il 40% circa ascrivibile al prelievo e tra-
sporto dei residui del verde.
Per quanto attiene il sequestro annuo, si fa presente che,
mentre un pascolo naturale può sequestrareda1 a3 ton-
nellate di CO
2
/ha, un tappeto erboso di qualità, con una
buonamanutenzione, può sequestrare sino a 12 tonnel-
late di CO
2
/ha. Nel parco inglese, il sequestro annuo da
parte del tappeto erboso ha quasi raggiunto le 4 tonnel-
late/ha, mentre quello dovuto agli alberi è stato di circa
38 kg/albero all’anno. Lo studio dimostra l’importante
ruolo del verde urbano nel bilancio del carbonio in unpar-
co ad alta fruibilità; bilancio che potrebbe essere ancora
più positivo scegliendo le graminacee del tappeto erbo-
so con più alto tasso di sequestro della CO
2
e, soprat-
tutto, impiegando, quando possibile, mezzi per la manu-
tenzione con propulsione elettrica anziché a benzina o a
gasolio.

tains a 1.5 ha lawnwith 69 trees of various sizes aswell as
various types of hedges, shrubs and flowers.The data devel-
oped and reported byWood, using a precisemethod for de-
tecting the carbon footprint, shows that the park has a car-
bon pool of 778 tons of CO
2
and that the annual seques-
tration comes to 8.2 tons against carbon emissions of 1.5
tonsannually for adecidedly positivebalance.On the sideof
CO
2
maintenanceemissions,774kgannuallywhichaccount
for 51% of total emissions, 575 kg or 74% of maintenance
total are attributed to mowing and 66 kg or 8,5% to leaf
sweeping. Transport and waste removal emissions come to
747 kg per year to account for the other 40% of all carbon
emissions.
As regards carbon sequestration, it is pointed out that anat-
ural pasture can sequester 1 to 3 tons per year whereas a
quality lawnwith goodmaintenance can sequester asmuch
as 12 tons of CO
2
in that period.AnEnglish lawn can reach
sequestration of 4 tons/ha whereas the rate for trees can
come to some 38 kg/tree/year.
The study demonstrates the important role played by urban
greenery in balancing the carbon footprint in a greatly fre-
quently public park. The balance can becomemore positive
with the selectionof agrass seedwithahigh rateof CO
2
se-
questration and especially with the use, where possible, of
electricmaintenanceequipment rather thangasolineor diesel
poweredmachinery.
