Soil consumption, between 2006 and 2021 lost in Italy over 1,100 km2

25.11.2022

World Soil Day, celebrated on 5 December, was an opportunity to evaluate soil consumption in Italy. According to ISPRA, (the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) which photographed the situation with the 2022 SNAP Report, between 2006 and 2021 Italy lost 1,153 sq. km of natural or semi-natural soil, an area as large as the Municipality of Rome. The main cause of this phenomenon is urban expansion which contributes to those extreme climatic phenomena which in Italy produce an estimated damage of 8 billion euros a year. Overbuilding in fact not only reduces the capacity of the land to absorb and drain rainwater but also determines an increase in the average temperature in urban areas since it limits, even significantly, the dispersion of heat during the coldest hours of the day.
