l’imprenditoria giovanile nel settore primario. Complice anche la crisi
economica e l’anti-ciclicità del comparto (si può rinunciare a tutto per
vivere, tranne cheanutrirsi),diversi indicatori sembranomostrareuna
tendenza positiva in termini di “attrattività” dell’agroalimentare verso
i giovani. Ma è davvero così? Una prima risposta a questa domanda
arriva dall’analisi dei dati occupazionali per fasce di età. Tra il 2008 e
il 2013, gli occupati agricoli in Italia sono diminuiti del 6%, quelli con
meno di 24 anni del 15%. A prima vista, quindi, il presunto ritorno al-

or some time now the catchphrase “return to the land” has been
heard repeatedly amongmembers of the younger generationwith
the significance of a renewed interest in farming activities able to
create jobsand youngentrepreneurs in theprimary sector.Accompanied
by theeconomiccrisisand thenegativecyclephase in thesector –every-
thing can be renounced to live except food – various indicators appear
to showapositive trend for theattractionsof agro-food for youngpeople.
But is this really thecase?An initial response to thisquestioncomes from
analyses of occupation data according to age category. The number of
workers in agriculture declined by 6% from 2008 to 2013 and those
younger than24 yearsof age fell by15%.Soat first glance the supposed
return to the countryside does not seem to be taking place. But to avoid
a hurried conclusion, Nomisma, an Economic Studies Society –with the
backing of Cattolica Assicurazioni, FederUnacoma the L’Informatore
Agrariopublishinghouse, (all attendinganEIMA International conference
onNovember 13th ) – conducted a study for the dual purpose of under-
standing the requirements for developing farmingenterprises ledby young
farmers and the real degree of attraction the sector exercises on those
insearchof a jobor holddownemployment outsideagriculture.Thestudy
was obviously targeted onpeopleunder the age of 40, anagewhichun-
doubtedly refers to the concept of maturity but for Italian law is still the
watershedbetween youngandnot so young farmers.The reasonbehind
this research, broken down into two lines of investigation, lies in the dif-
ficult prospects for future sustainability in theprimary sector. It isknown
that the fabric of agricultural enterprises is suffering fromoldage. Farm-
ers of over 65 years of age account for 37% of the total against 5% of
