zione è normalmente eseguita con la tecnica del trapianto delle zol-
le.Unbuon tappetoerbosodeve rispondereadeterminati requisisti che
riguardano il comportamento del pallone per quanto attiene il suo roto-
lamento e l’altezza di rimbalzo, nonché il mantenimento della direzione
impressa calciando il pallone a filo d’erba.
Inevitabilmente,anchedopo lamigliore realizzazione, il tappetonel tem-
po va incontro a un degrado. I motivi sono diversi. In primo luogo si ha
il compattamentodellastrutturadel terreno,conuna riduzionedellape-
netrazionedell’ariaedell’acquache limita losviluppo vegetativo. Lacau-
sa principale è il calpestamento da parte dei giocatori. Una buona frui-
zione del campo, in condizioni climatiche favorevoli, non dovrebbe an-

rass pitches for professional football, especially for
premier division play, are built mainly with natural
grassand theconstruction isusuallydonewitha tech-
nique for transplanting turf. A good grass cover must meet
determined requirements having to do with the conduct of
the ball in rolling or bouncing aswell asmaintenance in the
directionof the impressionby kicking theball on the surface
of the grass.
Evenafter the finest construction, over time the grass cover will de-
teriorate for many reasons. First there is compaction of the terrain
resulting in a reduction in the penetration of the air and water to
limit the development of the vegetation. The feet of the players on
the pitch are themain cause. Sound use of the pitch in favorable
weather conditions should not exceed 6-8 hours of play in the au-
tumn-winter period and 16-18 hours in the spring-summer period.
In unfavorable conditions play should bemore or less halved. The
commitmentsof football clubs in the championship seasonand cup
play oftenmakes it difficult to respect these limits. Among the oth-
er factors which condition the quality of the grass cover are: insuf-
ficient natural light oftendue to standsbuilt toohigh to increase the
capacity of the stadium, a shortage of nutrition, thermal stress and
possible fungus attacks.
Themaintenance intervals involve:mowing thegrassand irrigation,
defelting and aerating the soil; sand top dressing and overseeding
or complete or partial re-turfing; fertilization, treatment and clean-
ing.
