Of importance, however, is the analysis of yet another factor which is of-
ten not seen by the end-user. This is the impact on the environment. The
use of some substances applied for crop treatment and other uses are
being restricted in some European countries under European Union Di-
rective No. 128 of 2009 enacted in law in Italy by legislative decree No.
150 of 2012. This legislation is aimed mainly at fields under crop, public
and private green areas and areas near roads, railways and waterways.
Germany, for example, applies especially restrictive norms on some sub-
stances and requires reporting of the quantities used annually. From this
point of view, the technologies examined result in two advantages: as stat-
ed above, on the one hand the quantities allowed only for plant treatment
and that strictly needed to avoid having excess substances pollute the
environment and, on the other, the recording of data on each operation
on the so-called Data-log in the black box which can be used to show com-
pliance with the norms of the user’s country.
In conclusion, what is perhaps most important and that is related to safe-
ty. Automated systems for work, automatic control of the rate and sec-
tors, self-steering relieving the operator of a great number of repetitive
control requirements which are also fatiguing and lead to loss of con-
centration increase the risk of an accident.
There are thus many factors and benefits to analyze when dealing with
technologies based on GPS and those which result from information on
position. Many have been cited as have many systems and each would
require specific and extensive treatment. But this article has another pur-
pose and that is to stress the point that the technologies are mature and
the expense of the initial investment is repaid over the long run in finan-
cial, environmental and on-the-job safety terms.

ropei sono in atto restrizioni sulle quantità utilizzabili di alcune sostanze
utilizzate per il trattamento delle colture e non solo. La Direttiva comuni-
taria N° 128 del 2009 (recepita dal Decreto Legislativo N° 150 del 2012)
ha tra le sue finalità principali la protezione dell’ambiente in senso lato: i
campi coltivati, le aree verdi pubbliche e private, le zone in prossimità di
strade, ferrovie e corsi d’acqua. La Germania, ad esempio, è particolar-
mente restrittiva e per alcune sostanze occorre dimostrarne il quantitati-
vo utilizzato durante l’anno. Le tecnologie esaminate hanno in tale ottica
due vantaggi: da un lato consentono, come già detto, di applicare il trat-
tamento solo dove e nelle quantità strettamente necessarie evitando co-
sì che sostanze in eccesso possano inquinare l’ambiente, dall’altro per-
mettono la registrazione dei dati (il cosiddetto Data-log) di ogni lavorazio-
ne, in modalità “scatola nera”, che possono poi essere utilizzati per di-
mostrare il rispetto delle normative vigenti nel paese di utilizzo.
Infine un ultimo aspetto, ma forse primo per importanza, è quello legato
alla sicurezza. Sistemi di automatizzazione delle lavorazioni, controllo au-
tomatico del rateo e delle sezioni, auto-sterzatura, sollevano l’operatore
dall’esecuzione e dal controllo di un gran numero di attività ripetitive e
stancanti che possono portare ad una perdita di concentrazione e quindi
all’aumento del rischio di incidente. Sono davvero tanti, quindi, i fattori ed
i vantaggi da analizzare parlando delle tecnologie basate su GPS e deri-
vanti dallo sfruttamento delle informazioni sulla posizione. Ne abbiamo
menzionati diversi, così come molti sono i sistemi citati, ognuno dei qua-
li richiederebbe un trattamento specifico ed approfondito. Ma l’obiettivo
di questo articolo è un altro: cercare di sottolineare che le tecnologie so-
no mature e che a scapito di un investimento iniziale ripagano anno dopo
anno in termini economici, ambientali e di sicurezza sul lavoro.
