
John Deere redesigns its high-powered tractors
John Deere is launching a new generation of 8R, 8RT and 8RX tractors. The updated models cover the segment from 280 to 410 Hp in the case of the 8R and from 310 to 410 Hp for the 8RT and 8RX. One of the most significant changes made relates to the cab. Operator comfort and intuitive control are at the heart of the new 8 Series design. The updated CommandView 4 cab introduces a number of enhancements designed to reduce fatigue and simplify daily operations. New features include soft-close door technology, push-button start with pin protection, 320° windshield wipers and wireless smartphone charging. The redesigned ergonomic CommandArm armrest integrates CommandX Plus or CommandX Pro, available with e23, AutoPowr or eAutoPowr transmissions (for 370 and 410 models). The standard accessory display allows operators to save and recall customized settings for seat position, climate control and infotainment. In 8RX models the new CommandView 4 Plus cab eliminates the right-hand console, increasing legroom by 15% and improving side visibility to the attachment by 20% (manufacturer data).
John Deere says that during the development of the new 8 Series cab, the driver and the needs of large agricultural operations were put at the center of the project with a unified operating concept for both the operator interface and the precision farming technology – from 6M tractors up to the high-horsepower 8R and beyond – with settings transferable between vehicles. This feature allows operators to easily switch from one tractor to another without the need for additional training.
According to the American company, the new 8R series tractors can operate large equipment almost always without the need for additional ballast. The Intelligent Power Management (IPM) system ensures that the tractor delivers exactly the power needed, optimizing efficiency when full power is not required. The Centralized Tire Inflation System (CTIS), or the four-track configuration of the 8RX model, further reduces ground pressure, helping to protect soil structure and yield potential. Integrated precision farming solutions deliver centimeter-level accuracy, while new Reactive Command Steering ensures stable, intuitive steering, making it easy to move from one field to another.
The eAutoPowr transmission enables a transport speed of 50 km/h at a low engine speed of 1,150 rpm. At low speeds (up to 5 km/h), the transmission operates fully in electric mode, offering precise control and maximum torque for the most demanding jobs. Reactive Command Steering delivers car-like steering response, with an adjustable return-to-center function that improves road stability. Additionally, variable steering ratios based on tractor speed reduce steering effort.
The 8R, 8RT and 8RX tractors are precision farming ready, with integrated reception technology, G5Plus CommandCenter display and JDLink connectivity. Field operations - including vehicle settings, guidance paths, and application maps - planned in advance via AutoStart in the John Deere Operations Center are sent wirelessly to the vehicle and automatically start when the field boundary is crossed. All models in the series offer variable rate and depth control of the working tools. Passive guidance allows precise operations to be performed even with complex or large equipment, even in reverse.
There are also innovations on the design front with a narrow engine chassis that reduces the turning radius to just 5.7 m. The integrated ILS front axle is a distinctive element both aesthetically and functionally, capable of reducing headland maneuvers and overlaps. The narrow, wasp-waisted design also ensures excellent visibility of the front axle towards working lanes, the front linkage and road junctions.
John Deere says that ease of maintenance was a key objective in the development of the new 8 Series. Daily checks can be carried out from the ground, with direct access to the main maintenance points. Fluid level and air intake clogging sensors provide alerts on the G5Plus display. The engine's air intake system uses the Venturi effect to keep the air filter clean, extending service intervals. Finally, remarkable features include the eAutoPowr transmission, which uses an electric drive instead of the traditional wear-prone hydrostatic unit, and a single-line CTIS system with oversized seals to reduce the risk of tire failure. The 8R Series consists of five models with 280, 310, 340, 370 and 410 Hp, all with a maximum rear lift capacity of 13,890 kg and an optional front lift capacity of 6,520 kg.
