Claas Axion 9, silent power
The new Claas Axion 9 tractors, presented as a world premiere at Agritechnica 2025, are ready to make their field debut. The range consists of seven models (five wheeled and two Terra Trac) powered by the FPT Cursor 9 six-cylinder engine (also approved for HVO fuels) with a displacement of 8.7 liters, maximum power between 330 and 450 Hp and maximum torque between 1,571 and 1,850 Nm. The innovative dynamic Auto Droop function adjusts engine speeds based on the activity and power required by the driveline, PTO shaft and hydraulics, ensuring appropriate power delivery. When the engine is idling, speed is reduced to 650 rpm: this saves fuel and reduces the noise level.
The Axion 9's fuel tank capacity has been increased to 712 liters, and to 860 liters in the Terra Trac models. Maintenance times have also been improved: oil changes are now required only after every 750 hours of operation instead of every 600, while the intervals for the most important filters have been extended from 150 to 300 hours. There are also significant updates on the continuously variable transmission front. The electronic traction management system has been redesigned and the new vehicle driving controller makes it possible to switch from direction of travel to pedal, joystick and PTO modes in advance without changing speed or rpm. Auto Load Anticipation proactively optimizes engine speeds and transmission ratios based on an adaptive algorithm and efficiency maps for the engine, continuously variable transmission, hydraulics and ancillary units. The central system detects load changes in advance, such as when lowering an implement into the ground, and proactively increases engine speed before the load change occurs.
The cabin is another of the strong points of the Axion 9. Featuring a volume of approximately three cubic meters, it is equipped with driver's seats featuring ventilation, heating and a massage function. Up to 40 degrees of rotation to the right (and 10 degrees to the left for easy entry and exit) improves tool control. Distinctively interesting features include the ability to zoom in and out of images on the high-resolution camera on the new Cebis connect terminal and to aim the camera (integrated between the headlights) in the desired direction. According to the Harsewinkel-based company, the new Axion 9 cabin, at just 66 db(A), is one of the quietest on the market. This was achieved not only by special sound-absorbing glass, but also by reducing the noise of the gearbox pump and by the four-point mechanical suspension with angled shock absorbers capable of reducing vibrations. On the lighting front, the Axion 9 is equipped with up to 22 LED headlights offering as much as 56,000 lumens.
In the new series, Claas is introducing a generation of integrated Cebis connect terminals. In addition to the main 12-inch screen in the armrest, information and applications can also be displayed on a second 12-inch touchscreen terminal: all functions can be set and configured on both. The vehicle parameters - speed, consumption, PTO shafts, and hydraulic control circuits - are displayed on an additional, height-adjustable terminal in the right-hand pillar. Cebis connect can therefore be used – with one or two displays – to work with implements, automatic guidance, ISOBUS applications or work orders, spreading or variable rate applications based on a prescription map.
The hydraulic system has a flow rate of up to 370 l/min, provided by a standard 220 l/min pump and an optional additional 150 l/min pump. In both equipment variants, up to eight double-acting control valves can be supplied at the rear, as well as front-mounted implements with up to two dual-action control valves. The ¾ inch connections at the rear mean that up to 170 l/min can be supplied through a single line, for example for single-acting supply of trailers.
Lifting capacity is enormous: 11-13 tons at the rear and 6.5 tons at the front. The optional air support for the hydraulic lift makes coupling and uncoupling easier: filling is done with the engine running via the air compressor of the braking system. The maximum permissible total weight is up to 20,000 kg for the Axion 9 wheeled vehicles and 22,000 kg for the Axion 9 Terra Trac versions.
