New continuously variable transmission for CLAAS specialty tractors

CLAAS presented its first specialty tractors with continuously variable transmissions at Agritechnica 2025, with four new NEXOS 2 CMATIC models. The models are available in four variants with widths ranging from 1.0 to 1.55 meters. These dimensions are suitable for working between the rows of vineyards and orchards. The NEXOS 2 CMATIC is powered by a 3.6-liter, Stage V, four-cylinder FPT engine with power outputs ranging from 85 to 120 Hp. The engine and transmission have been integrated low into the frame to improve both forward visibility and safety on sloping terrain. The optional PROACTIV suspended front axle is designed to improve maneuvering in tight spaces, thanks to its tight steering angles and 80 mm of spring travel. The new NEXOS 2 with continuously variable CMATIC transmission reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h, while the CLAAS driving controller, with automatic mode, adjusts the engine speed and transmission ratio to suit the operating conditions and power requirements. Furthermore, on slopes and during road transport, the Power Zero system keeps the tractor stationary until the accelerator pedal or the CMOTION lever is operated. The direction of travel can be changed in three different ways: with the REVERSHIFT lever located to the left of the steering wheel, with the CMOTION driving joystick or with the new ELECTROPILOT joystick, located to the right of the CMOTION lever. Another strong point of the new models is the four-pillar cabin, updated with the category 4 filtering system. The cab floor is flat to provide more legroom, and the wide door opening makes it easier for the operator to get in and out. The steering wheel is leather and, thanks to the Dynamic Steering function, only 1.9 turns are needed from lock to lock, two fewer – points out the German company – than the traditional steering mode. The armrest has been redesigned and includes a CMOTION joystick integrated into the premium seat, with low-frequency air suspension in the NEXOS 2 M, L and XL models. For managing ISOBUS equipment, CEMIS 700 terminals are available, which can be used via the supports positioned on the right-hand side of the cabin. Furthermore, thanks to a camera located at the rear of the cabin, the driver can monitor the quality of the work on the terminal without having to turn around. All models are equipped with LED lights and work lights. The new CLAAS specialty tractors are equipped with powerful 110 l/min working hydraulics, which supply up to ten front and eight rear couplings via up to four double-acting distributors, with a load capacity of up to 2,930 kg at the rear and 2,910 kg at the front. The electro-hydraulic control of the automatic PTO relieves the operator from the stress of manually operating the mounted implements, and having to activate and deactivate the system at each headland turn.
