Claas round balers: the great versatility of Variant

by Giacomo Di Paola
May - June 2016 | Back

Even though they were developed by Claas for the silage market segment, Variant round balers offer exceptional performance even with hay, straw, or renewable raw materials thanks to the four pressing strips that run fast. Flexible and with high performance, Variants are equipped with reinforced chains and a powerful rotor (it drags the bale and provides a forced startup) that enable the applications to produce optimal bales in different working conditions. The versatility of these machines is further confirmed in the characteristics of the pick up, available both in the traditional 2.10 metre version (it made its debut on a Variant) and in a wider 2.35 metres version for larger swaths. And speaking of the pick up, it is important to point out how the weight distribution and the special design of the wheels were designed by the engineers of the German company to enable the baler to not only adapt to the shape of the terrain, but also to preserve the turf even at sustained speed and in turns. Available on request, a very advantageous technology is the roller compensator, which allows to optimize the compression of the product, to accelerate the flow, and to ensure at the same time the active power of the rotor, with a considerable reduction in working time (up to 30% less, according to the manufacturer). Equally efficient is the hydraulic system. Equipped with a pressing density adjustment mechanism (for maximum density in all conditions), it employs three hydraulic cylinders with a two tensioning arm system: opening and closing the tailgate and placing the bale on the ground are achieved by the Variant in just 6 seconds.
