Elika is a low noise pump designed and developed by Marzocchi Pompe of Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna) in close collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna, which received a mention in the EIMA 2018 technical innovation competition. Thanks to this important partnership, the University and the Emilian company have studied, developed and created a helical toothing characterized by a lower number of teeth (moreover, without encapsulation) compared to other pumps on the market. The innovation introduced by the Casalecchio di Reno brand allows to significantly lower the pressure fluctuations and the vibrations transmitted to the other parts of the component (pipes, tank and valves) and, at the same time, to significantly reduce the fundamental frequencies of sound emission. According to the manufacturer, Elika is able to decrease noise emissions up to 15 dBA (the comparison is with a traditional external gear pump), while the maximum operating pressure is similar to that of cast iron or aluminium models, achieving levels of up to 300 bar. Naturally - Marzocchi Pompe points out with a technical note - despite the reduction in number of teeth, the new helical structure ensures full continuity of movement. Elika has its ideal field of application in the industrial sector, especially in the forklift segment, and in the automotive sector. However, it has great possibilities of use also in the agricultural sector. They can be used on board telehandlers and for typical barn work, a place where noise reduction is essential to ensure the welfare of the animals. It is precisely for this reason that the pump developed by the Bologna-based company is finding growing use in the hydraulic mini-pumps of hay distributors and in the nail-cutting machines of pig farms.
